Victoriastadt – also known as Kaskelkiez – is a tranquil urban idyll directly behind the completely renovated Ostkreuz station, one of Berlin’s most important public transport hubs. The urban neighbourhood is characterised by a predominantly Wilhelminian-style, partially listed perimeter block development. In the immediate vicinity there is a wide range of individual retail outlets, a lively gastronomic and cultural diversity, schools, daycare centres and youth facilities. The Boxhagener Kiez neighbourhood with its flea market and well-known nightlife is just a few minutes away.

Kaskelstrasse represents the Berlin neighbourhood at its best. Like an “eye in the storm”, the location radiates tranquillity and residential quality that is unique in the middle of the metropolis with its island character.
Thanks to its proximity to Treptower Park, the location also scores highly in terms of recreational value. It is not without good reason that this established neighbourhood is considered an insider tip and is sometimes referred to as a small “Prenzlauer Berg”.
The place name “Victoriastadt” is an expression of the close connection that existed with the United Kingdom under its regent Queen Victoria at the end of the 19th century.
As a historic working-class neighbourhood, the district has strongly influenced the traditional image of the old Berlin of the Wilhelminian era. The poet and draughtsman Heinrich Zille – a member of the Berlin Secession – spent five years of his life here and incorporated many impressions from the neighbourhood into his milieu studies and drawings, which were not only described as “masterpieces” by Käthe Kollwitz.
Kaskelstrasse was named after the lawyer and university lecturer Walter Kaskel (1882-1928) in 1947. The professor of labour law was a co-founder of modern labour law in Germany.
